Potluck in the Park - November 2, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Bravo Publications @ 4:50 pm
For the past three years, Internationally recognized jazz pianist Tom Grant has arranged an incredible lineup of musicians and vocalists, and last year our major event sponsor and event venue The Acadian Ballroom created a wonderful and intimate jazz club atmosphere and a sumptuous supper buffet. The Acadian will again be providing the venue and the buffet for the Winter Warm 3 concert.

Potluck in the Park is an all-volunteer, grass roots, secular, tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization. For the past 18 years, we have been serving a free hot meal to anyone in need every Sunday at O’Bryant Square in Portland. At the present time, we are serving between 400 and 600 needy guests each week.

We are often asked how we determine who is in need.  We don’t ask, but assume that if they are in our line there is a need in their lives.  We see people from all areas of life, for many and varied reasons: disabilities, unemployment, marital problems or abuse, dysfunctional social problems, medical problems, paychecks or pensions that no longer cover the costs of daily life, food, medicine.  There are many reasons people come that we never see or hear about so we serve everyone without question.  Our guests also include low income elderly and working poor families.

We have no paid staff or office overhead. Our entire budget goes toward providing hot meals directly to the people who need it. Servers for Potluck in the Park are all volunteers, many of whom represent area schools, service organizations, or churches. Food donated by individuals, businesses, organizations and religious institutions of all faiths is supplemented by donations gathered on a weekly basis from area grocers, wholesalers, hotels, restaurant owners and caterers. Some of our community partners include the Oregon Culinary Institute, Western Culinary Institute, the YWCA, Loaves and Fishes Centers (The Meals on Wheels People) , Birch Community Services, Volunteers of America, the Association of Catering and Event Professionals (ACEP) and the Oregon Food Bank.

With the worsening economy, Potluck is serving greater and greater numbers of guests each week, and our costs for paper goods, gasoline, other operating supplies and supplemental food are escalating at a frightening rate.

The Winter Warm concert is our major fund raising activity of the year.  Please come, and bring your friends. I promise you, it will be an evening to remember!

Date and time:

Sunday, November 15, 2009 4:00 PM light supper and silent auction; 5:30-8:00 PM concert and mini-live auction.
